Debunking Eight Popular Beliefs on Breast Cancer

By Misa Ocampo

Once breast cancer has been diagnosed, treatment that would normally follow a surgery would be through hormonal therapy, using prescribed medications that can be purchased from discount prescription drugs pharmacy. These would be taken along with scheduled chemotherapy or radiotherapy sessions. But above all, detecting symptoms prior to their development is crucial. Because of the commonness of breast cancer, many beliefs about it circulate mainly by word of mouth in our society. Most of them, however, are either not exactly to the point or misleading altogether.

Although breast cancer can be diagnosed as soon as symptoms begin to surface, for some women, no indications are evident. For this reason, early screenings are necessitated. Detecting symptoms prior to their development is crucial. Once breast cancer has been diagnosed, treatment that would normally follow a surgery would be through hormonal therapy, making use of prescribed medications that can be purchased from discount prescription drugs pharmacy. These would be taken along with scheduled chemotherapy or radiotherapy sessions.

The second most common type of cancer next to lung cancer, breast cancer can also strike men even though it is 100 times more likely to strike women. Nevertheless, despite these somber facts, it is good to know that breast cancer is now curable given that it is detected early. Because of its commonness, many beliefs about breast cancer circulate mainly by word of mouth in our society. Most of them, however, are either not exactly to the point or misleading altogether. Let us debunk eight of the most popular ones.

* Belief 1: Majority of breast lumps tend to be cancerous.

Truth: Research has proven that only 20% of breast lumps are malignant and positive for cancer. The remaining 80% are benign. Therefore, it is vital that we see our doctor immediately should changes occur. He or she would recommend either a mammogram, biopsy, or ultrasound to find out whether our lumps are cancerous or not.

* Belief 2: Women with a history of breast cancer are the only ones susceptible to it.

Truth: Studies showed that 70% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no evident risk factors of the disease at all. However, risk is doubled for those who have had first-degree kins with breast cancer.

* Belief 3: Women who wear underwire bras up their chances of acquiring breast cancer.

Truth: It has been confirmed that the claim regarding underwire bras applying pressure on our lymphatic system possesses no scientific basis. Neither the kind of bra nor the tightness of it has anything to do with breast cancer.

* Belief 4: Every woman has a 1/8 chance of acquiring breast cancer.

Truth: For women in their 30s, there is a 1/233 chance of coming down with breast cancer. However with age, the risk increases as well that by the time they reach 85, they would already have a 1/8 chance of getting the disease.

* Belief 5: Antiperspirants and deodorants with alum content can cause cancer.

Truth: Even though the American Cancer Society shuns this rumor, they are still having more researches conducted to test its validity.

* Belief 6: Women with small breasts have decreased risk of acquiring breast cancer.

Truth: Breast size has no connection to breast cancer. Yet, diagnosing it among women with larger breasts proved to be harder than it is for those with smaller breasts.

* Belief 7: Caffeine is one of the causes of breast cancer.

Truth: The link between drinking caffeinated drinks and breast cancer is not scientifically established at all. In fact, recent researches have revealed that caffeine can do the reverse: decrease our risk of acquiring breast cancer.

* Belief 8: Breast cancer can be prevented.

Truth: Even if it is possible for all of us to decrease our chances of acquiring breast cancer, preventing it is unlikely since it strikes largely due to chance. Nevertheless, early detection would be the best way to combat it, and this is only possible through regular breast screening exams, mammograms, and consulting our doctors immediately for any noticeable change.
